Microsoft Showcase School Tours

The Microsoft Showcase School Tours were an incredible chance to see inside some of the most innovative schools in the UK.  Those who attended one of the four school tours, UTC Reading, Downe House, Danesfield and Wimbledon, had the opportunity to see inside an exclusive global community, recognised and celebrated for their educational transformations and successes in enhancing student learning.

This year, each tour began and ended at the brand-new Microsoft Store in Oxford Circus! This offered our attendees the chance to go behind the scenes and explore the store with the chance to try the Acer Thronos zero gravity chair and talk through technologies such as Azure.

UTC Reading

UTC Reading specialises in Engineering and Computing for students from the age of 14 to 19. The college delivers these specialisms through high quality technical qualifications alongside GCSE’s and A Levels. Alongside an exceptional, technical and academic education, students have opportunities to work in partnership with high profile local employers who will open their minds up to the world of work.

Our school tour at UTC Reading focused on a tour of the campus with the chance to visit the classrooms in action! In addition, attendees heard presentations from the Leadership at UTC Reading and were able to hear first-hand UTC’s experience of an educational transformation.

Downe House

As a Showcase School, Downe House is committed to preparing our girls for their future. We use market-leading, Microsoft technologies to facilitate and develop those 21st Century learning skills, that they will require to succeed. Skills such as Collaboration, problem solving and the ability to use ICT to truly enhance teaching and learning, are now encouraged across all subjects and benefit the entire Downe House community.

We were thrilled to welcome you to Downe House to see for yourself, how we are using the technology we now have and to share our experience of Digital Transformation from both faculty and student perspectives! We are constantly evolving our thinking and seeking new and innovative ways to enhance the education we provide to our girls. That journey will never stop!

Danesfield

Those who attended Danesfield were welcomed with a tour of the school to see teaching and learning in action across all year groups and to see for themselves the impact technology can have on creative learning approaches. The tour kicked off with a welcome presentation from their Headteacher Sarah Morgan about the impact of Microsoft Education within the classroom and how they structured their CPD. Those who attended Danesfield were treated to a tour around the campus, that culminated with a Q&A where pupils and teachers answered any questions our guests had! We hope you enjoyed your day at Danesfield!

Wimbledon

Wimbledon High School, an independent girls’ day school for ages 4-18, is a Microsoft Showcase School and use of Teams and OneNote is a cornerstone of our approach. Our STEAM philosophy - cross-curriculum thinking, making and experimentation - is at the heart of what we do, aided by Scientists in Residence and our STEAM Lab. This enabling space helps develop our pupils to become confident, critical thinkers, with a creative approach to problem-solving. We only use technology where we can show an impact on learning and believe that the human relationships between staff and students are the most important part of any school. We were honoured to be listed in the Edtech50 2019, recognising schools in the UK at the forefront of innovative use of technology.

The Wimbledon tour featured a talk on Digital Innovation with Rachel Evans (Director of Digital Learning & Innovation) and Taryn Lombard (Deputy Head), that was followed by a visit to the STEAM room to meet Alex Farrer, Head of STEAM at Wimbledon. Attendees then visited lessons from Year 7 to Year 13 to observe the STAM philosophy in practice. The tour concluded with a final talk led by Jane Lunnon, Headmistress of Wimbledon High School, and Rachel Evans, to offer a roundup of Wimbledon’s educational transformation. We hope you enjoyed your tour of Wimbledon High School!
