Lifelong kindergarten: cultivating creativity through projects, passion, peers and play

23-Jan-2019
The Bett Arena
21 Century Skills Inspiration Teaching Tech Pedagogy
Today's kindergartens are becoming more like the rest of school, with children filling out math worksheets and working with phonics flash cards. I will argue for exactly the reverse: the rest of school (in fact, the rest of life) should be more like kindergarten. I will explain why kindergarten-style learning is ideally suited to the needs of today's society, and I will present strategies for supporting kindergarten-style learning, based on the “Four P's of Creative Learning”: Projects, Passion, Peers, and Play. I'll support my ideas with examples of technologies and activities developed by my research group at the MIT Media Lab, including the Scratch programming language and online community.
