Seminars - ''Institutional Innovation'': The curriculum, subject knowledge, skills, and children’s cultures
Seminar Details SEMINAR BOOKING CODE: SO22 How should the design of the school curriculum seek to reflect the content of subject disciplines and skills frameworks as well as the diversity of young people’s cultural experiences and socio-economic backgrounds in a ''new media era'' of perpetual innovations? Schools are being told to be ''innovative'' and ''creative'' in solving these challenges, yet to date there is little consensus about how schools should go about developing whole-school or institution-wide innovation. Ben will provide an introduction to recent school-based initiatives and policies that have sought to develop innovative schools, and especially curriculum innovation. He will show how some emerging models of curriculum innovation position school as preparation for a creative new media era, while other initiatives have explored curriculum innovation as a way of democratising school knowledge by including young people’s own cultural experiences as the basis for enquiry. Using a range of examples, Ben’s presentation will help schools to make sense of current debates about curriculum innovation, and to begin the process of planning innovative and personalised curricula in which children’s own cultural experiences are considered worthy of consideration alongside subject knowledge and skills.
