Igniting their enthusiasm for engineering

Students were invited to experience the types of activities studying
Engineering might hold for them recently at Loughborough University
The students were drawn from three High Schools in the Wigston area of
Leicestershire, namely South Wigston High School, Abington High School and
Bushloe High School. All students were potential Level 1 and Level 2 Engineering Diploma candidates.

They participated in various activities, and learnt about hydraulic systems and materials and processes using computer-based simulations and lessons. This knowledge was then used in a hands-on practical using a hydraulics trainer and an
injection moulder.

The learning materials used encourage team working and self-paced learning and the students all agreed that they had enjoyed working as part of a team and that they preferred this method of learning. They were excited to find out that they could be using these types of resources as part of the Engineering Diploma.

Nigel Jones, Head of Design and Technology, at Guthlaxton College, commented “As an introduction to a completely new area of engineering, the interaction that the software simulations facilitate is truly first rate. Moving from the simulations to
the hardware was painless and easy. Watching the students handle the equipment with such confidence after such a short time was inspirational."

As a result of the day, the students unanimously agreed that they had enjoyed the experience and as a result would seriously consider Engineering as an option.
