INSET Planning Kit

Your Guide to Making the Most of a School Visit

This page is designed to show you how an INSET visit to BETT can help your staff

gain new skills, give them experience of using a wide variety of resources with

confidence, acquire new knowledge, give them ideas for lesson plans, as well as

seeing examples of inspiring good practice.

This page will help you identify what value attending the event can bring to individual

staff members and to your school as a whole. It also aims to help you achieve

elements of your School Development Plan through an INSET day at the show.

How to register a group

Registering your school group is easy.

• First go to
www.bettshow.com/register and fill out your details

• Then follow the onscreen instructions and on the final page you will be asked for your colleagues details.
• They will be sent an email just to confirm their information and a badge will be sent to them

FIRST STEPS: Group Planning

• Identify elements of your School Development Plan (SDP) causing concern

• Identify areas of CPD needed to help with these

• Identify new resources needed to fulfil these

• Check with budget to identify funding issues

• Discuss with staff how this exhibition can help them achieve their objectives

• Link SDP objectives with relevant staff

• Discuss who is best to attend the exhibition (job roles, departments)

• Finalise how information on resources and good practice from CPD can be fed-back to the whole school.

THREE MONTHS TO GO: Looking at the cost benefits of your show visit

• Has the group been registered on the show website?

• Has a coach or other travel arrangements been booked?

• Has the staff looked at the seminar programme on the show website for suitable sessions?

• Have members of staff identified what they need to develop their own skills and/or knowledge?

• Have you booked supply cover?

• Is the governing body aware of how the show will assist in achieving the aims of the SDP?

TWO MONTHS TO GO: Making the most of staff time when at the show

• Have the staff started to plan their visit by looking at the

Show Website for relevant exhibitors and products?

• Have they begun to create personalised floorplans from

the website matched to their chosen SDP issue?

• Have they booked appointments with selected

exhibitors via the show website?

• Have you pre-booked spaces at chosen seminar(s)?

• A fee applies to secure your place, however any

available spaces on the day are free.

ONE MONTH TO GO: Ensuring that everyone is clear about their mission

• Have your badges for the event been delivered yet?

• Have you planned a briefing session, where staff discuss what they hope to achieve at the show and how they plan to do it?

• Have you put a date in the diary for a feedback session after the show?

• Have you negotiated how individual staff (or groups) can be allocated a specific budget to spend at the show?

AT THE SHOW: Making it work

• Have staff been briefed regarding meeting times, departure times and other “house-keeping” details?

• Have you highlighted the importance of visiting the BESA Information Point for information about products or exhibitors?
