Karen Scott

Founder/Director, Mid Kent College of HFE

Karen is passionate about helping young people to experience the software development industry.  She is fully committed to helping keen programmers to build their skills and experience in preparation for a career in development.

An ex-developer,  (Karen was part of a development team working on 3D kitchen design software, Planit, for MacOS), she spent over 25 years teaching IT/Computing at Mid Kent College. She now works part-time as Digital Pathways Training Manager with IT apprentices on the Step Forward programme, an excellent, socially integrated, apprenticeship scheme run by The Challenge. As teacher, examiner and assessor, she has known many talented programmers and is often disappointed by the limited opportunities for progression into the workplace.

Karen’s research projects have explored the role of employers in raising student motivation and providing meaningful work experience.  A Winston Churchill Fellow of 2014, she spent time in Denmark and Japan discovering how students combine academic learning with work-based learning, or with industry-led competitions.  Convinced of the need to combine a full, broad-based education with significant work-based learning, she has set up futureCoders which provides a real software development working environment, with real projects and professionals working alongside full-time college students.
